The Feud on Channel 5: Episodes 1, 2, and 3 unpacked - who dies, what's under the tree, and THAT affair!
By Helen Fear |The Feud is doing exactly what Channel 5 thrillers are famous for - introducing a group of friends or family who all seem to have something to hide within a central mystery - in this case what appears to be a bloody death!
The six-part series has all the makings all a compelling mind-twister, including a truly brilliant cast of TV favourites, and a somewhat bonkers plot that - at first - throws up more questions than answers. Oh, and it's written by the same guy who created The Inheritance - probably the best Channel 5 thriller so far.
Here's our take on The Feud episodes one, two, and three, and all the questions we need answered in the finale nest week...

The Feud episode 1 recap: Who dies, and what's under the tree?
The first instalment of The Feud on Channel 5 introduced Emma Barnett (Jill Halfpenny) and her husband John who, along with their daughter Beth, seemed to live a contented life on Shelbury Drive. But, of course, there were some almightly cracks in their marriage - and that's before the dodgy builder showed up!
First impressions? That criminal defence solicitor Emma made Donald Trump look like a reasonable human being. Stubborn as a mule, she insisted on going ahead with a kitchen extension, despite all reason. Not least that she managed to find a builder within a day, who could start immediately! Red flag anyone?
From this point onwards, Emma's ill-thought-out extension began to spiral out of control. Older neighbours Derek and Barbara raised objections to the project, refusing to sign the party wall agreement, citing their "precious tree" as the reason. While, on the other side, Sonia seemed only too happy to have them stay (or John, at least).
Refusing to cave in to pressure, Emma made the questionable decision to get her planning permission rushed through, involving her estranged wheeler-dealer father Terry. It seemed he owed them, quite literally. Emma told him: "We trusted you with our money."
And while all of this was going on, Emma's career took a sinister turn when she came up against a revenge-seeking police officer who blamed Emma for having wrecked her career. Someone was following Emma, too... Could it be the disgruntled copper?
Questions we have after watching
The first episode gave us a pretty big clue as to how the series ends - with an estate agent showing someone around the Barnett house just ONE MONTH after the street party. The family have clearly made a hasty exit, there was an unfinished extension, and the walls appeared to be covered in blood which screamed 'don't buy me'.
Crucially, the potential buyer asked the agent if it was true the family who lived there were murdered. We know Emma is still alive, though, as she was spying on the house from the bushes. So who does the blood belong to? Who doesn't survive the C5 series?
Worth mentioning, too, that there were at least three houses for sale - including Emma and John's, Sonia and Alan's, and Derek and Barbara's.
The biggest question, of course, is how the HELL did Emma make the decision to have an extension and have it partially made within one month? A survey within two days? Clearly writer Aschlin Ditta has never had an extension before - the process takes months, not days!
Of course, in the upcoming episodes, we want to know what happened to Derek and Barbara's son. He seemed to have disappeared as a teenager, after many fights with his parents. Is he really under the tree, like the neighbours joke behind their backs? After all, Barbara cries as she waters the tree.
Lastly, it's pretty obvious to anyone with eyes that Emma's husband John is having an affair with neighbour Sonia - confirmed at the end of episode one. Perhaps it's the affair that causes blood to be spilled, not the extension? All will be revealed...

The Feud episode 2: Who left the dead magpie?
In episode two of Channel 5's The Feud, the friendships between the neighbours became thornier as more secrets and tensions arose.
It began with a terrible flashback, and ended with a bad omen. The opening minutes saw Emma back in the empty house on Shelbury Drive, where a flashback of a bloodied knife gave viewers a further clue about the fate of the house's residents.
Later, the episode came to a close with Emma - someone who is superstitious - finding a dead magpie in the garden. Wrapped around the dead body of the bird was a photo of Emma, alongside the words: "One for sorrow." As yet, we don't know who put it there or why. Although it could be neighbours Derek and Barbara, who are still vehemently opposed to the extension as they attempt to protect their tree. It could also be PC Andi Gallagher, who has an axe to grind against Emma.
During the episode, Andi approached Emma's daughter online and the pair eventually met. But what is Andi planning?
Meanwhile, bolshy builder Lee arrived to start the extension, despite no party wall agreement and planning permission being in place. Hold on mate, what's the damn rush? However, Emma's dodgy dad soon saw planning permission rushed through - but at what cost? We now know that property developer Terry "fleeced" Emma and John, which is why John wants nothing to do with him.
Lastly, tensions rose between so-called friends Emma, John, Sonia and Alan when they all went out for a night at the pub... The conversation turned sour, when Alan's "banter" went too far and angered John. Speaking of Alan, who was he on the phone to when he promised he had the money to get "something" done?

The Feud episode 3: Sonia is pregnant, and Emma is threatened
In episode 3 of The Feud, the row over Emma's extension became even more heated as her neighbours continued to stand firm in their opposition to the build.
It started with the most useful flashback yet; what looked like a man on the floor with a knife in his gut, surrounded by crimson blood. First guess - by the smart clothes (shirt and chinos) - would be Derek, following by Nick, or even Emma's dad Terry. There was no sign of John's lovely knitted jumper. Thank goodness, it would be a nightmare to get the blood stain out!
When Emma asked Derek and Barbara to move their tree, they responded aggressively. Tensions later boiled over when Derek threw a ladder at Emma's builder, Pavel. If Emma's daughter is to believed, Malcolm told her his dad Derek was a "violent" man who lashed out at Barbara and his son. He certainly seems to be one very angry man.
Nick - a security guard who works all night and tries to sleeps all day - found himself being driven insane by the noise from Emma's building work. On a mission to get backing for the parking permits, he decided to blackmail John, showing him the incriminating footage he had of him and Sonia. Although John denied everything.
Meanwhile, Andi got closer to Beth, who seemed to be falling for her. And Andi also began following John. But what is Andi's endgame? By the looks of it, her goal is to destroy Emma's life.
But Emma might be doing that entirely by herself. As well as the extension, her morally ambiguous job, and being in touch her dad again, she seemed to be getting closer to neighbour Alan. Is there something growing between them (no pun intended)?
Elsewhere, Emma was worried when her dodgy dad Terry revealed he wanted something in return for helping her get her planning permission so fast... He wanted her signature on paper, to vouch for him financially. It sounded illegal and could probably lose her the job she loves so much - and maybe even her husband. Ultimately, she refused, but will there be repercussions?
Lastly, the anonymous notes to Emma became more threatening as a second magpie arrived dead in her house. This time, thrown through the window attached to a brick and the message "two for joy".
The closing minutes of The Feud episode 3 also showed Sonia clutching a positive pregnancy test. Oops.
