Ellis on Channel 5: Everything we know about a possible series 2
By Helen Fear |Channel 5's latest detective drama Ellis has come to an end after just three episodes, but will there be a series 2?
The new series arrived on our screens at the end of October, and a short series followed. The final episode of series 1 aired on Thursday, November 14, 2024.
In the series finale, enigmatic detective DCI Ellis and her sidekick Harper arrived in the village of Brindleton following the report of two missing honeymooners...
With the newlyweds' phones found at the edge of a dangerous stretch of river, the working theory becomes that of a murder-suicide. But when a severed hand is found near the newlyweds' camper van, it becomes clear that the pair have met with foul play...
So after the series end of Ellis, here's all the news we have on whether there'll be a series 2...
Will there be a series 2 of Ellis on Channel 5?
Channel 5 has not yet confirmed whether Ellis will be back with a series 2. But we'd be very surprised if Sharon D Clarke does not return as the DCI in the future.
With Brenda Blethyn bowing out of Vera after series 14 in 2025, we're in need of a badass, no-nonsense detective on our screens.
Like Vera, Ellis has the potential to run and run. After all, Vera has aired on ITV over 14 years. There's no reason why Ellis can't do the same.
Like Inspector Morse, DCI Ellis hasn't yet shared her first name... Nor do we know why she's been on gardening leave. There's still so much to learn about the mysterious Ellis.
Viewers will know that series 1 was just three feature-length episodes of two hours each. Many would argue that's just not enough!
Fans want a series 2 of Ellis
Channel 5 viewers have expressed their hope for a series 2. One fan simply write: "Really enjoying this series - I hope more are made."
Another added: "Hope this becomes a firm regular Channel 5."
A third wrote: "I like watching a good gritty detective show on the telly, and Ellis is outstanding. Sadly, there's only three long episodes for series 1. I'd like to see more stories."
In response, a C5 spokesperson replied: "We'll put in a good word with the bigwigs and see what we can do."
Meanwhile, Ellis has been a hit with the critics too. The Telegraph said: "It's a long shot, many nascent detective duos having withered on the vine, but it's the interplay between this latest twist on the chalk and cheese duo, not the sotto voce sleuthing, which might just mark Ellis out from the crowd."
The Times said: "Sharon D Clarke's lone cop is the queen of the withering look."
Meanwhile, Radio Times said: "Ellis is the British detective drama that the genre has been crying out for. You can't overstate the significance of Ellis as a primetime police drama."
